How To Create A Destructible Mesh Unreal Engine 4

How To Create A Destructible Mesh Unreal Engine 4. Learn how to create a Destructible Mesh in Unreal Engine 4, the most important settings for destructible meshes.

To create a destructible mesh, you need to select a mesh from the Content Browser, with the mesh selected click RMB > Static Mesh Actions > Create Destructible Mesh, it will create a new file that has a similar name with the Static Mesh, except this new file will contain _DM at the end of the name.

Next, open the newly created file, in the Destructible Mesh editor you will see on the right side two main panels, the Destructible Settings panel (in this panel you will find various settings like: damage threshold, debris lifetime, effects, etc.) and the Fracture Settings panel (here you can set the number of chunks and the type of destruction applied to the mesh).

The Destructible Settings

The Damage and Debris settings are working great by default, but if you want to make changes to them, the most important are: the Damage Threshold (here you can set how much damage will cause a chunk to fracture) and the Debris Lifetime (how long should the chunks be visible).

For a stable Gameplay, you should check the Debris Timeout box in the Flags section. The Hierarchy Depth settings can be useful if you want to add an extra layer of debris, for which you can set a material and different effects (particle system and sound), to do that, in the Hierarchy Depth > check the Enable Debris box > Debris Depth - select how many layers you want to add.

Important! The collision that is setup for the static mesh that it is derived from, has no bearing on how collision will be setup for the Destructible Mesh. If you want an object to be able to do damage to a Destructible Mesh, you need to set Overlap Destructible in the object Collision settings.
