OpenShot Beginner's Guide

Here you will learn the basics and how to use OpenShot, how to edit a video file, how to add transitions, how to export your video file and more...

Let's start

OpenShot default layout has 3 main working areas, an empty box (Transitions and Project Files), the video preview and the timeline. To start editing a video file you need to drag files from your computer to the Project Files area, after that, you can drag the project files to the timeline and start editing the video.

Edit Video & Audio

Drag photos and / or videos onto the timeline, arrange the photos and / or videos in whatever sequence you want them to appear in your final video, if you overlap two clips, OpenShot will automatically create a smooth fade between them, displayed by blue rounded rectangles between the clips, you can rearrange the clips as many times as needed by simply dragging and dropping them. To add audio, drag the audio file in the timeline, position the audio in the first track below the photos and / or videos tracks.

If you want to change the default transitions, select the Transitions panel next to the Project Files and choose a new Transition, drag it into the timeline between two project files.

Export Video

To export your video, press the Export Video button (red circle) in the Toolbar > type your file name > choose where to save it in your computer > select a target video format > choose a video profile > select the quality of your video > press Export Video.

How to change the default length of images dragged into timeline? Go to Edit > Preferences > Image Length > type a new length (in seconds) > Close - Now all the images that will be dragged in to the timeline will have the same length that you have specified.
