Lighting The Environment Tutorial Unreal Engine 4

Learn how to work with lights in Unreal Engine 4 - learn how to place, adjust the position, the rotation and the color of different type of lights in your game levels.

How to place lights in the scene

Go to Modes panel select the Lights tab, left click on a light then drag-and-drop the light in your level. There are 3 main type of lights in Unreal Engine 4: Point Light, Spot Light and Directional Light.

Adjust the position, the rotation and the color

Once a light is added, you can then adjust the position, the rotation and the color, you can do that in the Details panel. The position and rotation can also be adjusted in the editor Viewport.

Directional Light

The Directional Light is the ideal choice for simulating sunlight, therefore it is used in many games that have a natural environment. The Light Direction is indicated by an arrow that points in the direction the light will emit, which is useful for orientating your light as needed. In the details panel you can change important proprieties, such as: Mobility, Intensity, Light Color, etc. If you search for an actor that can provide light for the entire level, then the Directional Light is what you are searching for.

Point Lights

Point Lights are actors that emit light equally in all directions from just a single point in space. In the details panel you can change important proprieties, such as: Mobility, Intensity, Light Color, Source Radius (radius of light source shape), Source Length (length of light source shape), etc.

Spot Lights

A Spot Light emits light from a single point in a cone shape, like a flashlight. If you want a light that simulates a wall light or a street light, then the Spot Light actor can be really useful in this type of situations.

Sky Light

The Sky Light, is not an actor that emits light, is an actor that captures the distant parts of your level and applies that to the scene as a light. This actor can provide alternative solutions if you do not want to light the environment with Directional Lights.
