Alternative medicine is also known as: traditional medicine, folk medicine, indigenous medicine, natural medicine, fringe medicine, unconventional medicine, unorthodox medicine, heterodox medicine, complementary medicine, integrative medicine, new-age medicine.

There are many types of alternative medicine, but the most widely known are: Ayurveda, Bioelectromagnetic therapy, Biofield therapy, Chiropractic, Homeopathy, Naturopathy, Mind-body medicine, Traditional Chinese medicine (Acupuncture), Reiki, Shamanism.

Alternative treatments can have side effects and some of them can be very dangerous, even fatal. Many alternative treatments are not subjected to testing for side-effects, for such treatments the concerns are well founded and the risks unknown.

Nowadays, if you want to diagnose or treat a disease, it is recommended to visit a health professional, like a licensed and accredited doctor. It's a thin line between alternative medicine and quackery or fraud, so, be carefull. The only positive effect that alternative medicine can have, is the placebo effect.

Is alternative medicine older than modern medicine? The short answer is: Yes. Even though, alternative medicine is older than modern medicine, is not necessary something positive, for instance: if you have an old rusty car and a new one, which of them do you think will bring you to work daily 10 years from now.
